How is nuclear chemistry used?

Radioactive isotopes are used to determine the age of an object based on the amount of decay there is. This is called radioactive dating. In turn, radioactive dating is based on the fact that the rate of decay is constant in radioactive nuclei. The unit of measurement for decay is given in terms of half-lives. A half-life is the time required for half of a sample of radioactive atoms to decay.

Radioactive dating is used to find the ages of objects. The half life of a carbon-14 isotope is used to find the age of ancient things. Radioactive dating can also be used to measure geologic time.
