How do ionic and covalent bonds compare?

Compounds are made up of ionic and covalent bonds. Covalent bonds are the strongest types of bonds and occur when there are shared electrons between atoms. Covalent bonds are not known to break spontaneously because there is generally too little energy in the molecules to break the bond. Ionic bonds occur when electrons are donated from one atom to another. In other words, a complete transfer of electrons occurs, which results in two seperate ions. One is usually positive, and the other, negative.
