What is a polyatomic ion?

The definition of a polyatomic ion is: an ion made of two or more atoms bonded together that function as a single ion. The molecules within polyatomic ions are generally bound tightly together, allowing it to retain its original identity even after having gone through some chemical reactions.

Polyatomic ions are commonly found in "families" that share the same central element and same charge. Within these families are some variations, but nothing that stands out too much. Common differences are:

*Different number of oxygens
*They are able to combine with hydrogen atoms to neutralize their negative charges
*Some members have sulfur in place of oxygen
