Matter
- It is defined as anything that takes up space and has volume. Another defining characteristic of matter ismass and volume .Mass
- It is often confused with weight, but it is important to know that they are not. Mass is different from weight because weight depends solely on the amount of gravity that is pulling down on the object.Volume
- It is the amount of space an object occupies.Properties of matter
- There is some properties of matter that you could guess what they are. We will cover these properties briefly.Properties of Matter
Property | Description | Example |
Electrical conductivity | Ability to carry electricity | Copper |
Heat conductivity | Ability to transfer energy as heat | Aluminum |
Density | Mass-to-volume ratio of a substance | Lead |
Melting point | Temperature at which a solid changes state to become a liquid | Ice melts to liquid water at the melting point of water |
Boiling point | Temperature at which a liquid boils and changes state to become a gas at a given pressure | Liquid water becomes water vapor at the boiling point of water. |
Index of refraction | Extent to which a given material bends light passing thtough it. | The index of refraction of water tells you how much light slows and bends as it passes through water. |
Malleability | Ability to be hammered or beaten into thin sheets. | Silver |
Ductility | Ability to be drawn into a thin wire. | Tantalum. |
Two type of properties of matter
1. Physical properties
- Definition of: Properties that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter.
- Example of: Color, Texture, Shape, and mass
* State of matter
- one of physical properties
- State: Solid, Liquids, Gases (Common states of matter.)
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Solid | Liquids | Gases | |
Volume | Fixed | Fixed | No Fixed |
Shape | Fixed | Variable Shape | No Fixed |
2. Chemical properties
- Definition of: properties that can be observed only when substances interact with one other.
- Example of:
1. The iron in bicycle reacts with oxygen in the air to produce rust.
2. Some kinds of fruit turn brown then they are exposed to the air because they contain compounds that react with oxygen
